Festive Satyr with Putti and Basket of Fruit

Elegant sculptural group in patinated terracotta, depicting a young, festive satyr or faun accompanied by two putti, with a richly filled basket of grapes and fruit. The work, signed on the reverse, reflects the 19th-century Historicist taste and the revival of the French Rococo tradition, characterized by the reinterpretation of playful mythological and Dionysian compositions.

The central figure is depicted in a lively twist of the body, with a smiling expression and his gaze directed towards his young companions. His hair is adorned with vine leaves and vegetal elements, while his left hand supports a richly filled basket of fruit and bunches of grapes. The two putti, positioned on either side of the central figure, participate in the composition with a playful and dynamic attitude, contributing to the overall sense of movement and liveliness.

The complex articulation of the figures, the softness of the modelling and the richness of the decorative details recall the celebrated production of Claude Michel, known as Clodion (1738–1814), the renowned French sculptor of the late 18th century, particularly known for his terracotta compositions depicting satyrs, fauns, putti and divinities of the Dionysian world.

The group belongs to the cultural climate of 19th-century Historicism, a period in which the taste for the 18th century and, in particular, for the elegant and sensual language of the Rococo enjoyed considerable popularity. Clodion’s works were the subject of numerous reinterpretations and replicas intended for European collectors, contributing to the revival and dissemination of this decorative repertoire throughout the 19th century.

The sculpture is attributable to Albert Rollé, a sculptor born in Prussia in 1816 and active during the 19th century. His production includes various figurative and decorative works executed in terracotta. His connection with Clodion’s artistic tradition is further supported by the existence of works by Rollé catalogued as d’après Clodion, particularly compositions depicting fauns and figures drawn from the mythological repertoire.

The signature on the reverse constitutes an important documentary element in support of the identification of the artist. The quality of the terracotta and the precision of the modelling, particularly evident in the anatomical rendering of the figures, the treatment of the hair, vegetal elements and basket of fruit, lend the work considerable artistic and collectible interest.

The subject, playful character of the composition and refined sculptural language make this group particularly representative of the 19th-century taste for reinterpretations of French Rococo models and the mythological inventions of Clodion.
