Description

Pair of Venetian Wall Mirrors

(19th Century)

An elegant and exceptional pair of Venetian wall mirrors (ventole), crafted in the true Venetian Rococo style during the second half of the 19th century by master cabinetmakers of the Venetian lagoon. The work fits perfectly into the refined current of the Rococo Revival, a 19th-century artistic phenomenon that celebrated and revived the decorative splendor and formal lightness of 18th-century Venice.

The wooden structure is entirely and finely hand-carved. The fluid and sinuous line of the cartouche frame is embellished with a typically Venetian decorative repertoire:

Crest (Cimasa): A pierced upper pediment dominated by a central stylized shell motif (rocaille), flanked by opposing scrolls and small floral elements.

Sides and Body (Bordi e fusto): A mistilinear geometric development enriched with foliated scrolls and vegetal ramages that follow the profile of the mirror.

Apron (Grembiule): A lower termination centered around an inverted palmette element, consistent with the ornamental flow of the piece.

The finish is executed using the traditional technique of gold leaf gilding, which gives the whole a warm and deep brilliance, enhanced by the play of light and shadow created by the reliefs of the carving. The original mirror plates, which follow the shaped profile of the rebate, feature the characteristic and evocative natural patina and oxidation of time—elements that attest to their authenticity and increase the historical charm of the work.
