SLEEPING BABY JESUS

SLEEPING BABY JESUS

 Jesus asleep on the cross,

Oil on canvas,

Dimension: 60x45 cm

seventeenth century Florentine school.

Painting reference by Cristofano Allori, Florence.

Jesus asleep on the cross is a symbol of the Passion and the Crown of thorns and the Nails emphasize this aspect. But at the same time this

child is immersed in a placid landscape of sublime beauty, in the background we can see the city of Jerusalem.

The image of the Child Jesus asleep on the Cross, alongside the Crown of Thorns and the Nails of the Crucifixion, is a clear reference to divine love, most likely inspired by a passage from the Song of Songs (V, 2):

I sleep, but my heart watches.

A noise! It is my beloved who knocks:

"Open me, my sister, my friend, my dove, my perfect one;

because my head is wet with dew,

my curls of night drops ".

A love so great as to lead to the extreme sacrifice that Christ will accomplish for humanity. But the Child appears softly asleep, while a light breeze seems to caress his hair and even the symbols of the Passion seem to disturb his sleep.
